I find the recent report from the number crunching folks at the Pew Center entitled “ Religion among the Millennials”an important contribution. It says young people are not losing faith, just unplugging from religious institutions at a rate unprecedented in U. S. history. So our challenge is to give the disaffected Millennials a religious home. In this “Year of Newman” we too celebrate that great thinker and educator, Cardinal John Henry Newman and we look again to his valuable lessons and reclaim them for our Campus Ministry today. We are to reach out to our students to encourage communities of faith that really foster the religious values of their many faith traditions. We pride our Catholicity and our strong ecumenical spirit that foster respect and in Newman’s words a place and a ministry, where “ heart speaks to heart”. We do not pretend to have all the answers but we join our students and faculty on a journey that embraces them right where they are and our concern for their spiritual development.
